Cacklefest returns to Pomona

If you're planning to be in Pomona for the Winternationals, you're not going to want to miss the goosebump-inducing opportunity to see Don Garlits behind the wheel of Swamp Rat III photo courtesy NHRA.com Race fans at this year’s Winternationals in Pomona, California, Feb. 8-11, will be treated to some special nitromethane-fueled echoes from drag racing’s past, including an appearance from one of Hemmings Muscle Machines’ newest celebrity columnists, “Big Daddy” Don Garlits.

Garlits and the Swamp Rat III front-engine dragster will lead a field of 20 vintage drag racers in a Cacklefest exhibition at the first race of the NHRA season, held annually in Pomona.

The Cacklefest, which consists of having the cars push-started down the drag strip from the finish line to the starting area, and then lined up along the return road, will take place between the semifinal and final rounds of the Pro category eliminations.

Cadillacs, La Salles and Ferraris wanted
Hemmings needs outstanding examples of Cadillacs, Ferraris and BMW motorcycles for a special display at the New England Concours d’Elegance in July.

As a follow-up to last week’s news item on the forthcoming New England Concours d’Elegance being put on by Hemmings Motor News at Stratton, Vermont, on July 20-22, we are seeking certain cars for Sunday’s concours.

For our premier event, the featured marques being honored will be Cadillac/La Salle and Ferrari, along with BMW motorcycles, and we are seeking outstanding examples of each for display. The main vehicles we are interested in are those built in the 1930s, ’40s, ’50s, ’60s and early ’70s; however, exceptions will be made to limited-production models produced thereafter.

If you own or know of a finely restored example of any of the above vehicles, or perhaps an all-original vehicle that’s been well preserved, and believe it should be invited to join this special display, we are very interested in learning more about it. Kindly contact the editor of Hemmings, Richard Lentinello, at 802-447-9648, or via e-mail at rlentinello@hemmings.com .
